The Adventure Begins
Kim HIniker insights day one . (11/5/24)
Day one was quite an adventure. We flew from Minneapolis to Atlanta then
Atlanta to Guatemala. My very first international trip. Many of my friends on this journey
have flown out of our homeland country of the United States, but it was the first time for
me. The sights at all three airports were very different. The familiarity of the Minneapolis
airport, to the famous hub of the Atlanta airport where connecting flights, take those to
where they want to go. This is where our mission trip and adventure began and off to
Guatemala we went.
When we landed I could tell we had arrived by the temperature
change, the way the airport was built and what was inside. It was then I knew we were
no longer home and we were welcomed into an unfamiliar country where the hustle and
bustle of the two airports I had experienced were behind me. The sights, colors, and the
people outside of the airport were such a sight to see. The culture of Guatemala is so
beautiful. The families waiting for their loved ones to arrive in a mass with flowers and
balloons being sold was just what I needed after two flights.
After the flights, it was a
three-hour van ride to San Lucas and I unfortunately didn’t handle it that well and ended
up getting motion sick a half hour away from our hotel. This was not my proudest nor
my finest moment and I missed most of the sights of our first day, but I could tell from
what I had seen that Guatemala was beautiful in color, culture, and its people. Here’s to
a better day two and time for the mission trip to truly begin and for our work to be truly
appreciated!
